Later in life,
you learn that breathing
is not breath at all
but the moment
another life
begins to echo
inside your own
You look at them
and see
your whole future
looking back
Your heart becomes
the measure
of their footsteps
Your choices
lay the ground
before them
And love, at last,
is surrender
the quiet knowing
that all you are
and all you give
is made radiant
in their return
It is a loosening
of the self
the slow blurring
of I into them
until the mirror
holds not your face
but the shape
of all your kindness
And you are not lessened
by the giving
but widened
a vast, silent sky
bearing the sun
of their existence
To be the vessel
is enough
To be the hush
beneath their joy
is the greatest life
you ever lived
