The tide of you

The Tide of You

I don’t know how to tell you

The way I feel inside,

With memories grown translucent now,

Like shells beneath the tide.

They blur and break and drift away,

My pride a wounded guide,

As if the mind seeks shelter

In the things it tries to hide.

I walk beneath the winter stars,

The sea a silver sheen—

A mirror for the fractured parts

Of all that might have been.

The depth of color in your eyes

Transcends the skies of blue;

How could I not miss your milky skin

And forget my love for you?

The waves reflect the moonlight

In a cold and liquid fire,

As if the water memorized

The height of my desire.

I don’t know how the earth rotates,

Or how shadows learn to stay;

They cannot touch the golden light

That crowned your summer days.

Whene’er my eyes grow dreamlike

And my chest beats hollow heat,

I find you in the blurring lines

Where sky and water meet.

You are the whisper in the leaves,

The salt-spray on the air,

A ghost of grace I cannot hold,

But find just everywhere.

I see those eyes, that longed-for smile,

A mirage I still meet;

The bridge between the world I lost

And the path beneath my feet.
