Sent to Try Us

And so, in pursuit of a new TV, we went to Crynant last night and discovered the car wasn’t well. Lol.

Driving up those dark country lanes, we heard a thud, and the whole car heaved, then just… stopped. Antony’s verdict, delivered like a man reading the news: the timing belt has gone.

The car’s worth around £3,000, and the repairs could be anywhere from £1,500 to £3,000. And if the Pistons have done what Pistons do when they’re offended, it could even need a new engine. I’ve had her since 2022, and I’m still paying for her, so at this point, it looks like the finance company can have her back. Gutted.

Still, I’m not car-less thanks to the little Corsa I bought for my son. So it’s back to a smaller car, but at least it’s four-door, and it gets us from A to B without turning the evening into a survival documentary.

We waited three hours for the AA to turn up, then caught a taxi back to Neath to pick up Ant’s car. After that, he still had to go and get Kai from Swansea because he was at a gig. The recovery man eventually arrived, took one look, put it straight on the back of the truck and basically told me to go home because I was frozen solid.

So, yesterday taught me this: even when you change the timing belt, service it, and throw a new clutch at it for £850, a car can still decide it’s done with you.

I need a new tyre for the Corsa because we’re currently rolling around on the spare, but apart from that, we’re good to go. And Antony is putting in some bulbs as we speak, including the registration lamp, because apparently our lives now run on a strict schedule of “what else can break today?”

Honestly, though, I’ve spent my whole life driving around in bangers, so this is nothing new for me. Lol. I’m basically seasoned. Road-tested. Emotionally MOT’d.

And I am staying in this weekend. No road trips and no TVs. These things are sent to try us.

with lots of fire & not much grace,

MissT
