Misplaced Loyalty
I let the tears fall when I’m alone,
Let my heart sink down to bone.
I hear your name in looping noise
A tidal pull, a phantom choice.
I’m willing still to play pretend,
To act as if we didn’t end.
I whisper, “We are truly done,”
Then lie and say you loved no one.
I turn betrayals in my hands,
Like ash from scorched and broken plans.
You’re human, yes, and humans bruise,
But truth was yours—you chose to lose.
What my mind can’t reconcile
Is how deceit became your style.
You didn’t speak, just walked away,
And left the wreckage where it lay.
You wore your kindness like a mask.
I was loyal—that was my task.
But now I see what loyalty cost:
It wasn’t you. It’s me I lost.
