Extinguish Not My Fire:

A Gothic Confession

by MissT

The wind has torn the rose from bloom,

And left its ghost behind me.

Your name still stirs within the gloom,

No grave shall yet confine me.

It breaks me to stay, it breaks me to part,

Each step a blade of yearning.

You dwell within my fevered heart,

A candle ever burning.

Once love was young and wild with grace,

We dreamed where moorlands shivered.

You kissed the rain upon my face,

And I, in silence, quivered.

But time grew cruel, its whispers cold,

Our vows began to wither.

You bartered warmth for weight of gold,

And love’s bright pulse grew thinner.

I sought you through the veiled decay,

Through letters never spoken.

Your eyes, once fire, had turned to clay,

Our sacred promise broken.

Still, I remain beneath the sky,

Though tempests would undo me.

The stars bear witness when I cry,

Their light will not undo me.

So let the night consume your name,

I will not plead nor tire.

Though ashes cling where once was flame,

Extinguish not my fire.

For even in the loneliest hours,

My soul recalls its splendour.

Love’s ruin births unearthly flowers,

My mercy, fierce yet tender.

And should you wander, lost and worn,

Through memory’s pale mire,

Know I forgave though love was torn,

And kept alive my fire.
